Betty Hutton was a beautiful goofball, born to play characters with names such as Trudy Kockenlocker (in Preston Sturges's The Miracle of Morgan's Creek)--not to mention Annie Oakley in the screen version of Annie Get Your Gun. The sides collected here find her moving between full-throated versions of standards ("Blue Skies," "It Had to Be You") and sublime comic protests ("Rumble, Rumble, Rumble," the Madonna template "Papa Don't Preach to Me").
