He was 27 when Johannes Brahms died. His musical oeuvre is extensive. He composed a number of majestic oratorios, five symphonies, the opera "Cecilia", cantatas, choral music,sixty outstanding songsto Dutch and French texts, a wealth of chamber music for various ensembles and an important oeuvre for piano, which reveal the refinement of his creative genius.
