CD Reviews

Songs for a Summer Night
Grady Harp | Los Angeles, CA United States | 10/09/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Miah Persson is an accomplished artist. Not only is she making a very big impression on critics and audiences alike for her immaculate Mozart repertoire both in opera and concert, but here she also proves to be a new lieder singer of tremendous presence.

This CD is music by Scandinavian composers, some well known, others not, but each has a penchant for the art song. Persson is accompanied on the piano by Roger Vignoles: it is actually a partnership or collaboration so finely attuned is each artist to the other's temperament. Persson's soprano is as smooth as liquid mercury and as warm as gold. She sings with warmth and intuition and her phrasing is stunningly accurate. Her communication of texts (yes, translations are included in the booklet!) is very much like that of the great lieder singers of the past and present. She is completely involved in each of the 26 songs she shares.

While it is refreshing to hear music that is rarely present in the recital halls, it will be exciting to hear her step into the repertoire with which we are more familiar. Doubtless she will and soon: Miah Persson is a gifted artist to watch! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 06"
