CD Reviews

"The old girl's gone but not forgotten!" ~Bette Midler~

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Fanny Brice lived on in FUNNY GIRL but the other great lady of the time, Sophie Tucker, is lost to us but for a few recordings and films - this among them. Even with the scratchy 1930's recording, this is an unbelievable treasure to remember what an incredible comedienne and songstress the old girl was. This album gives us a view of Sophie Tucker, and the impressive way in which she commanded her lyrics and gave way to a slightly "blue" side of vaudeville and an emotionally charged performing career. Racy for her time Sophie's material is fascinating to discover."

"...that was Sophie Tucker. Brazen, saucy, risque and a whole lot of fun, she was a legend in her own time, and, thanks to Living Era (such a great label), her contribution to music has been made available to us modern day shieks and jazz belles.

This album includes songs from Tucker's 1930 musical "Follow a Star", as well as other selections - each is a delight, and recorded from pristine 78's. This is one of those rare CD's wherein there are no songs that stand out specifically - they are all just wonderfully appealing - you will never find yourself skipping any of these songs when you listen. There are the ballads ("That Man of My Dreams" and "What Good Am I Without You?"), blues ("Washing the Blues from My Soul" and "If Your Kisses Can't Hold the Man You Love"), and, of course, the naughty, double-entendre ("Oh! You Have No Idea" and "I Never Can Think of the Words")... the list goes on and on.

The liner notes included are great, as well - Living Era never fails to disappoint in regards to historic documentation of their offerings, and this is no exception. The story of Tucker's early life and rise to fame is told - and details regarding her great songs are provided, as well.

If you're new to Sophie Tucker's work, this is a great way to start. Chock full of classics, at a price that's right - you can't go wrong making this purchase. As well, it's a must-have for Tucker fanatics - with so many great offerings, it would be a sin to pass it up. Just sheer delight."
