Melodic Rock Classic

"There was no shortage of bands playing this kind of music back in 1990, which meant that some bands were overlooked and never received the attention the deserved. Sons of Angels was one of those bands. Hailing from Sweden, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1990. The album featured 10 very upbeat melodic rock songs in a style similar to Bonfire and fellow Swedes Treat. It also has many elements that fans of current melodic rock acts Gotthard and Fair Warning should appreciate. It was a solid album from start to finish, and should have resulted in some success for the band.

Unfortunately, by the time the band was ready to issue a follow-up, grunge had reared its ugly head and this type of music was no longer welcome. It would take more than a decade for the band to release another album, 2001's Slumber With the Lion.

This is an album AOR/melodic rock fans owe it to themselves to check out, especially since it is so inexpensive.

Worth a Try, Regardless ...

"It's funny, nowadays everyone instantly dismiss The Sons of Angels the second the hear they now do the music for Sega and their Sonic the Hedgehog series. I'll admit their new stuff isn't exactly perfect, but that's no reason to not give their old music a try. Their debut album is packed full of great tracks, nice simple and effective lyrics and all very catchy with great rhythms. This is an album made back in the days where rock was actually good, before all the rubbish started piling out, before rock was ruined and bands mass-produced.

This is an album I will listen to and treasure for many years to come, a great rock album well worthy of the £15 I spent getting it."
