CD Reviews

Soundtrack is as Worthy as the Movie
Matthew J. Bross | Northeast Ohio | 04/27/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I am not a big purchaser of movie soundtracks. I also strongly consider myself a hard-line, staunch lover of Rock music. Beyond Rock & Roll, the only other musical genres I typically embrace are Jazz, Classic R&B and 70's Pop and Disco.

I became intrigued about the Canadian independent film Rub & Tug because lately I tend to prefer films that are a little bit left of center and just outside the mainstream. Whether it s through the simple association of the movie and its plot or its moods and tone, I became very interested in the music of accompanying soundtrack as well.

The music is performed and written by the Techno duo Soma Sonic, a Peterborough, Ontario Canada based duo of brothers Dominic and Francois Paterson.

This soundtrack provides an eclectic mix of some very distinct musical genres: Techno, Dance, Trip-Hop and it is also laden with a lot of smooth Jazz and a bit of sensual "Porno-Chic". It also possesses as distinctively urbane and sophisticated feel, but it is not pretentious. It is danceable as sometimes even reflective, especially in the songs with Berkeley, California-based solo artist Gretchen Lieberum on vocals. You could dance, make out or cruise around the city to this CD.

As far as some of the individual tracks go, "Throw It All Away" and "Sweet Song" would have made a good Adult Alternative or pop hits. "Meet" and the linked "Celebration" and "End of The Line" are the most driving and danceable tracks.

This soundtrack is one of those left of center CD's that could have been an accidental or a cult hit, just like the movie could have been. The soundtrack is almost as essential as the movie, check both out.
