There's no shortage of melodramatic goth music out there, but that doesn't prevent Soil and Eclipse from adding to the pile. Meridian, the band's sophomore effort, sees Jay Tye and partner G.W. Childs approaching goth from the electro perspective; the result is a well-sequenced keyboard- and drum-machine-based musical attack that, unfortunately, is weakened by Tye's David Gahan-meets-Andrea Bocelli vocals. Weakened? Make that mortally wounded. The cheese gauge is well within the red on tracks such as "Piano Song" and "Divinity." But when Tye sticks to the Depeche Mode side of things, you begin to appreciate his vocal training. "The Thief of Always," helped along by plucked strings and a crisp beat, features a mostly restrained vocal effort and "Exile," though it wallows in the '80s vibe of the Thompson Twins, isn't a bad demonstration of Tye's non-wince-inducing range. "I read Steve Landau's review of Soil and Eclipse "Meridian" and could not believe my eyes. Jay's voice weak? Not possible. Maybe Steve here should not be reviewing music (I.E. Goth music) that (by reading more of his reviews on Goth music) he obviously does not enjoy . I have been listening to the album for weeks now and no matter how many times I hear it, the music of GW Childs and the voice of Jay Tye makes me tingle. I have one word to describe Jay's voice....."ANGELIC". I don't know, maybe it's girl thing but actually everyone that I have loaned this CD to has returned it to me with nothing but praises. "Poetry of Angels" is a great start on a journey of pure emotions. As soon as the CD started I stood there unable to move for what seemed hours, I closed my eyes and walked the fence between dreaming and awake. "Thief of always" made me dance alone in my room with the lights dimmed. "Exile" was another song that captured my imagination and it took me a few minutes to realize what Jay was trying to do with that song. Makes you see -Satan- in a whole different light ;-) and it showed me the warm heart that Jay must have for people. I definitely recommend this album for the people that want to hear the sensual and capturing voice of an Angel."

""Meridian" surprised me with it's unique combination of gothic undertones fused with electronic dance beats, altogether reminscent of 80's rock / new wave in the vein of New Order. This album includes a wide variety of vocal progressions coupled with an array of beats and tempos, that keeps the listener interested all throughout. This is the best gothic related album I've heard all year. An amazing release by Soil & Eclipse!"

"As you can see from the difference here between the fan and "official" reviews, Soil & Eclipse is not for everyone. If you're not romantically or poetically inclined, you'll find some of what's here to be cloying, perhaps even bombastic. But, let us forgive their excesses! What's actually here is an extremely solid and commendable re-interpretation of the industrial dance scene, which has grown quite stale in recent years; when the refined sound of S&E's electropulses is laced with ethereal melodies, the result is very danceable, and even at moments sublime. Highlights include the opener, Poetry of Angels, which is lush and intricate; Meridian, their dance floor anthem, which is strong and infectious; and the powerful Valhalla and Exile. Falling somewhere between And One, KieTheVez and Project Pitchfork, Soil & Eclipse is worthy of your acceptance."
