Synopsis

Album Details
This is a Live Session Recorded for the BBC at London's Paris Theatre on March 11th 1971. John Peel Introduced the Concert as Being by "Soft Machine and Heavy Friends". This is a Unique Recording in That, for this BBC Session, the Band Augmented and Fragmented and Performed with Other Great Jazz Musicians, Including Ronnie Scott on Tenor Sax. It Actually Begins with the Elton Dean Group (Which a Year Later Evolved Into 'just Us') - Dean, Mark Charig, Neville Whitehead and Phil Howard - Augmented by Mike Ratledge on Electric Piano. Then Dean, Ratledge and Howard Are Joined by Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt. The 30-minute plus Medley is by the Regular Dean-ratledge-hopper-wyatt Quartet. For the Last Three Numbers Within the Medley, Soft Machine is Augmented by Ronnie Scott on Tenor Sax, Mark Charig on Cornet, Paul Nieman on Trombone and Roy Babbington on Bass. A Very Strong Performance that features Some of the Most Jazz-oriented Music Soft Machine Ever Produced.

CD Reviews

Another Great Recording from the BBC Vaults!
Mr.Smith | West Chester, Ohio | 07/26/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A great session featuring the "big four" Soft Machine lineup of Ratledge, Hopper, Dean & Wyatt. Guests include Wyatt's soon-to-be replacement, Phil Howard, and British jazz great Ronnie Scott. Sound quality is superb. A must for Soft Machine and jazz-rock fans."
Hang on, I've just swallowed my bug mike

"For those of us who think they are big, brave and pretentious enough to 'follow' the various Soft Machines from Coombe Springs to Somewhere/Anywhere Else, this is a most welcome release. Anything that has Ronnie Scott on the same stage as Hugh Hopper has got to be interesting, what? They really do let rip in that most unique way that macheted a path for free players actually to play in front of audiences other than other free jazz players? Now that I've got that out of my system, I'll shut up....."
