CD Reviews

A look back to the original hustler poet
Terrence D. Hillman | Colorado, USA | 03/25/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I just finished checking for reviews on Smoothe's classic debut, "...America." Obviously, he's been gone a long time and the people that wrote those reviews either don't know how, or forgot to do updates. This brother's been back in the game for a minute now, but in my opinion, his delivery has somewhat changed. He had sort-of a monotone, straight-to-the-point, no holds barred type flow which even showed some anger from what Smoothe has been through (or was going through) while recording America. I just finished listening to snipplets of this 2008 joint, and from it I can tell that he's changed a lot! Lyrically, he's still got it, but the beats aren't updated nor are they anywhere near as hard as DR's joints on the first. Smoothe's vocals sound more like an old Furious Five record, not that it's a bad thing, but I was looking forward to hearing Smoothe & Trigga but better! Truthfully, I miss the hard beats from the late 80's and the 90's, but it's true that more of the ladies actually purchase CD's while we're quick to get a dub. The music nowadays are catering to the ones that buy the music and include some tracks on there to bring some of us that wanna hear the real. Now, me, I'm picky! I have a large selection of music I've purchased (mostly old school.) I have Smoothe's first album, I have ALL of M.O.P's CD's, but in the same hand I'm holding the same jams their producers sample from (and then some!) After all that, I don't have one straight up jam with Smoothe, Trig and M.O.P. trading verses. No pressure, but "Welcome To Brownsville Part II is M.I.A. for real!! I'm not the type to have high expectations (or be a waiting mo'f**ker,) but what's up?!

**A note to Smoothe Da Hustler**

Violenttimes Day, nice try. Smoothe, your time is not up yet and I'm not seeking a repeat, but if you wanna still be in this business *you gotta listen to more Hip Hop, period!

*anybody reading this review, I did my homework and read an interview from internet resources, GOOGLE IT! For the so-called fan of the first album... where you at for this one?!

Once Upon a Time in America

It would be smooth if there was a remaster of Once Upon A Time... and include the original (previously unreleased) uncensored 12" remixed version of "Hustle," plus any unleashed materials from the debut, just to show 'em how it should be done."
