CD Reviews

A masterpiece

"When I first heard Small Craft Warnings I immediately got chills. The instrumentation, craft, and overall mood of the music moved me like very little music has done in a long time. I listen to a great variety of music, from Steve Reich to Dwight Yoakam to Tortoise, and Alex Gordon has given us a musical bridge into the 21st Century. Complex rhythms, ethereal backgrounds, passages of great beauty and emotion like you've never heard before, that is what Small Craft Warnings has in store for you. I realize this is a leap, but, a few years ago I went to see the Jackson Pollock exhibit at the Modern Art Museum in New York. What I saw in that exhibit was something I had never witnessed before, the transformation of an artist. Pollock was a very good cubist/expressionist painter, and much of his work was figurative, but eventually he leapt across the boundaries of conformity and created something that forever changed art, he created action painting. This is my metaphor for Small Craft Warnings. Alex Gordon has leapt forward to create a new music that hopefully will be heard so that he too can forever change what we percieve musically. Small Craft Warnings in my opinion is a masterpiece."

"Alex Gordon's "Small Craft Warnings" is a strongly compelling electronic record. Touches of dub, hip-hop, ambient, and indie pop are gracefully spiced throughout the CD. "Small Craft Warnings" is a refreshing surprise to me. I would highly recommend this CD."
