Pop time for Skeeter

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This record was the first Skeeter Davis record I ever purchased. I bought it because of the hit, "I Can't Stay Mad at You" This album for the most part represents the girl group sound that Skeeter flirted with in the 60's and she did it so well with her overdubbing and Chet Atkins production. "Easy to Love" " Ladder to Success" "Let Me Get Close to You"

Get Along Without You Now" all represent the pop sound, and there are some classic country Skeeter songs on the album as well. "Ask Me" is a classic song that should have been a Skeeter hit, but was never released as a single.

Skeeter was a unique singer, who sounded like nobody else. She was a gem, even if technically her voice and range were not as good as Tammy, Loretta or Patsy. Her phrasing and her risk taking in her song choices were always fun and her albums were never that predictable. This one is no exeption, missing country pop, pop and some pure hillbilly.

I prefer the country Skeeter sessions produced by Ronnie Light, where the overdubbing was less and the country fiddles and steel guitar were more, but this classic album is a must for any Skeeter Davis fans. Now if they would only release Hillbilly Singer, her best album, I would be very happy. It is a shame that once again, we have to get this one on import only."
