CD Reviews

Lives Up To Its Title
John L. Hughes, Jr. | Nashville, TN | 09/11/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"THE DEFINITIVE GROOVE COLLECTION may be a little too much Sister Sledge for casual fans, but for deep soul/disco lovers, this collection is a must. Besides the expected hits, this anthology includes such popular album cuts as "Betcha Say That To All The Girls" (featuring a humorous rap by jazz singer Al Jarreau), "Super Bad Sisters" (one of the earliest rap/sung collaborations), and the creamy Phiily disco/soul of "Pain Reliever". It also includes three non-album singles (The Top 20 UK hit "Mama Never Told Me", the ballad "Thank You For Today" and the peppy "Cream Of The Crop", which crawled to #100 on the Billboard r&b charts in 1976). The usual quality Rhino liner notes are here as well as clean remastered sound. According to the liner notes, Sister Sledge gets a mechanical royalty whenever "We Are Family" is played although they didn't write the song."

"This is not really a review, but a loyal Sister Sledge fan jumping for joy right now. All of my favorite SS tracks are on here. I think anybody who is a SS fan will truly enjoy this double disc. It's well worth it."

"Perhaps this is a bit too much for the casual Sister Sledge fan, but if you want a collection that covers all eras of their career, this is the one to buy. This compilation features all the well-known hits such as "We Are Family", "He's The Greatest Dancer" and "Lost in Music", in addition to favorites such as "All American Girls" and what is perhaps their best song in my opinion, "Thinking of You".

Sister Sledge sang the original version of "All the Man That I Need" that went on to be a big hit for Whitney Houston, and they had a minor hit with their version of "My Guy". They also had a big UK hit in 1985 with "Frankie", which is admittedly awful. All these tracks and more are included here."
