Synopsis

Album Description
This Austin trio draws on elements of acid, kraut, arena, punk, and new wave, as well as the darker reaches of nickel theater sideshows. It's a case study in mental instability and social dysfunction. Single Frame explores amalgamations of gritty analog and lucid digital, driving bass drums and volatile rhythms, rational grand piano and deranged fuzz guitar, resonant synthesizer and chaotic chant, delicate tension and soothing resolution. Includes a bonus DVD containing nine videos from the CD. "While Single Frame recall boundless rock like Wire, Mission Of Burma, Fugazi, At The Drive-In, and S.T.U.N., the band aren't aping those greats; they're just keeping good company"--Alternative Press. A tenth video for the track "Exact Copy In The Basement", currently in production now, will be available online after street date.

CD Reviews

Very promising band alert!
Scott Bresinger | New York, USA | 05/31/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"After reading about this band in Alternative Press magazine, I checked out their label's web site (remember the phrase that pays: "volcoment") and was delighted to find they were streaming the entire album for free. Since I could listen to the cd anytime, it would make me a sucker to actually buy it, right? Not by a long shot, Monty. That I actually spent money on a band I had previously never heard of before should be a testament to how impressed I was. Or I could just be a sucker after all.

Single Frame are not the most original band around (which of course doesn't hurt every other alt.rock superstar, but I digress) but at least their own particular recipe consisting of varying degrees of new wave, post punk, electronica (anyone remember electronica? Can I get a shout-out? anyone?), kraut rock and old fashioned "experimental" music has a nice taste on its own, kinda like a more lo-fi Radiohead or a less obsessive-compulsive Oneida, and even a little bit of Sonic Youth thrown in for good measure (but I say that about everything).

The cd comes packaged with a bonus dvd of music videos taken from the album, some of which are actually worth watching, and many of which rely all too much on that favorite working-on-a-budget crutch, "fun with stock footage," which is only actually fun if you're making the thing, or on drugs (in which case anything is fun; witness the popularity of jam bands, but I digress further). I dunno if these Single Frame guys will ever break out of the unederground, but you, dear Amazon shopper, could do a lot worse than this buried treasure."
