CD Reviews

Días y Flores: Silvio Rodríguez at his best
C. A. Parraga | Barcelona, Spain | 07/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I you are looking for an album to start your Silvio Rodríguez collection. This is probably the best choice. Most of the songs have become classics, recorded by recognised artists all over the Spanish and Portugese speaking world and also played on the guitar in intimate venues with friends, at night, around the fire, etc. Regarding the individual songs: "Sueño con serpientes" (I dream of serpents) is one of my favourites ever. It starts with a quote from Bertold Bretch, praising those indispensable men who fight all their life for an ideal. "Santiago de Chile" (on the unfortunate fall of Salvador Allende in Chile), has become a hymn. The verse "Allí yo tuve un odio / una vergüenza: / niños mendigos de la madrugada / y el deseo de cambiar cada cuerda / por un saco de balas" will haunt me forever. "Playa Giron" (Bay of Pigs) was the name of the ship where Silvio spent a few months entertainting the Cuban fishermen. "El Mayor" (dedicated to Major General Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz, on the 100th aniversary of his death in the battle of the sabana de Jimaguayú, 12-5-1873) has nother powerful image of the Major galloping on the froth of a sea of blackmen waving machetes and unchained. The list could continue as every single song is one of my favourites. Summary: Unmissable. It deserves not five but six stars!"

"PULSARDOPPLER17@HOTMAIL.COM Admiro la cualiadad de silvio para descifrar cada clave , exprimir la realidad de cada forma de cada sonido. Indudablemente no es musica para las masas por la sencilla razon que en muy poca gente puedes encontrar un mundo interior de la dimension del de silvio. Hollywood,Fla oscar mi Banda: MK2.3"
Magical ... enchanting

"This is probably the best Silvio album, and it's a good place to start for newcomers. These songs -- Sueno Con Serpientes, El Mayor, Como Esperando Abril, and more -- simply have no parallel in the English-speaking world. They're full of emotion, dignity and an empathy for the human condition. Incredible!"
