Silvia Torres - A Classic in the Making
Kevin Cox | USA | 02/22/2000

"Okay, if you are like me and have been hunting for some smooth, sophistcated Brasilian music, but just havn't been able to find the real thing, you have come to the right place. Silvia Torres is THE one. Like Gilberto Gil, Austrud Gilberto and, of course, Jobim, Torres has captured the sleek and mellow mood of truly lasting Brasilian music. Only she has added a compelling French twist that elevates it to an even higher level. From her broad range to her mixed styles, Torres has assemled a CD of absolutley classic quality. It is guaranteed to be on the racks for years to come - both in Brasil and France alike. Whether you are sitting on the veranda of the Grand at Copacabana siping a caiparinha, or watching the sun set over Nice, this music will fit the time and place - or take you there when you're just sitting at home. Do not miss this one. It is truly a classic. But all I can really say about it is, MORE, MORE, Please MORE!"
Probably the best new artist from Brazil

"I don't know why I bought this album but I'm certainly glad I did. As I do with most Brazilian music, I bought it without hearing it (usually end up loving them though). I assumed that because Silvia Torres was so drop-dead gorgeous there was no way her music would be any good. It begs the question: Can a woman have it all? Supermodel looks, outstanding voice, writing, and production? Well, Silvia Torres can and does. I'm just hoping there will be many more albums forthcoming. I must have played at least one track from this album every radio show that I did. My favorite song on the album is "Brincadeira na Fogueira" but all of them are great. It sounds like Bahian music to me, with a bossa-type vocal. Maybe what an Elis Regina/Luiz Gonzaga album would have sounded like. Heh heh..."Take Sarava" leads off the album and is the most commercial and upbeat of the songs, the others are more subdued and introspective. The strange thing about the album is that it seems to be all done in France, like Silvia is an ex-pat or something, and she even performs one song in French "Dans Mon Ile." What also makes me think this is that no Brazilian I have ever talked to has even heard of her. This is strange, because to me Silvia should be considered the equal of Marisa Monte (believe me this is a huge compliment)."
