CD Reviews

One of the Greatest Voices of the Century
Theodore Deacon | Seattle, WA United States | 03/18/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Onegin was a true contralto whose warmth and breadth of tone was astonishing. More extraordinary is the quality of these transfers which capture the luxurience of her voice exquisitely. The eveness throughout her range and fluency of coloratura have no equal today in her voice range. Add to this her seamless phrasing and phenominal breath control and one is left grasping for more superlatives. Onegin's "Samson et Dalila" arias are incomparably sensual. The "Hugenots" selection is light and charming without losing any of her smokiness. And her fleetness in the Donizetti and Mozart put to the lie the notion that contraltos cannot sing intricate fioratura. If you love vocal splendor, then you must hear this album! You will be as enchanted as I am."
One of the greatest mezzos of the century
Eric L | Montreal | 02/01/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Sigrid Onegin was one of the greatest mezzos of the century. Her voice was beautiful, her diction clear, her technique and musicality excellent. Her répertoire was extensive. Her vocal color would be appreciated even today, which is rare for singers of that era. She would have the opera world at her feet today."
