CD Reviews

Fifteen years later, it's still in me

"When I first heard "We Don't Do That Anymore" as a college kid on a Tucson radio station, I loved it right away. I thought it was from some soon-to-be-huge national act, not a local oufit with a singer, Dave Slutes, who I kept running into at the Home Den and the Smith's on Campbell. Fifteen years later, it's still one of my favorites. I originally loved "We Don't Do That Anymore" and "Sara's Not Sober," but "Little Boy" grabbed me soon after and never let go. And "Came On Like The Sun" -- wow. What a beautiful sentiment. A band this good, with a sound this distictive -- I don't know why they didn't break out of Tucson. But I love the feeling that when I listen to this CD, I know that I'm probably the only person in the world hearing the same words at the same time."
If you could only own one CD . . .

"I used to manage a small CD store, and as such I got to choose a lot of the music played inside. Whenever I played this CD, I always sold at least one copy to someone who'd never heard of the band. I stockpile copies of this CD used, and give them to people I care about. The only stipulation is that if they don't like it, they must give it away to someone else . . . not one has ever done that.

This is rock music at its best. Intelligent lyrics ("The noise from the tape deck was mostly drowned out by the buzz from the wine . . .")mesh with a fine tuned pop sensibility and a lead guitarist who does a totallly credible Neil Young impersonation. If you can imagine Hotel California era Eagles hiring Neil Young instead of Joe Walsh, with Michael Stipe on vocals, you've got it . . .

I can't imagine living without this album. Their others are excellent as well, but this one is something special. Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

"Folks. I agree wholeheartedly with both of the other reviews about this cd. I've played it to death and yet some 19 years later it still sounds great! I, like the others couldn't imagine not having this cd in my collection or getting to listen to it again. I think at every point in my life there something one of these songs connected with me.

And for $5.00 plus S&H, it's a no brainer not to pick this one up. You will be doing what the previous review says.. buying copies and giving them out as presents to friends. BTW.. this band had to change their name after this cd as another band already had the name (Sidewinders). They later became 'The Sand Rubies'. I also urge you to get 'the self titled (Sand Rubies)' cd from 1993. Both choices are excellent.
