Synopsis

Album Description
The Shukar Collective was born in Romania from the meeting of new generation musicians with the gypsy traditions of Shukar founders Napoleon, Tamango and Clasic. Shukar play ursari music (ursar means 'bear tamer' or 'bear handler') using spoons, wooden barrels or darabuka to create a powerful and urgent sound that is at the same time emotional and soulful. Urban Gypsy combines Shukar's original ursari music with the new technology of the collective, resulting in their distinctive sound.

CD Reviews

Like nothing you have ever heard.

"I originally heard a track or two on PRI and liked it. Since then I have purchased the CD, just released in the USA May 24th and am looking for anything I can find by them. This music is not for the timid. If you are locked in to traditional everyday music this is not for you but if you are willing to expand your musical horizions, this CD is for you. It's RAP with a driving rythum that capitavates, try it you may like it."

"I confess that I am writing this review having only seen the video of "Malademna," not having heard the whole album, but since Amazon at this point has not provided any information about the CD, I thought I'd do that.

This group was born in Romania and incorporates gypsy elements into their songs. According to the blurb on the CD cover, they play usari music, using spoons and wooden barrels in making their music.

I really like the music and visuals on the "Maldemna" music video. It's lively music with an intensity to it, and an interesting video concept. Fans of Serart should love this. (For now, check out reviews and samples of Serart's album to get a general idea of this one.)

If I get to hear more of this later, I will add more to this review, but I hope this much is helpful."
Electronica & Spoons

"The guitarist, Ottmar Liebert once referred to his band Luna Negra as Old World instruments meets New World instruments.

This CD is exactly that. The folk songs and instruments of the Romanian coupled with electronica breakbeat. Great music for those that can enjoy music with lyrics that are in foreign languages. A very enjoyable album and necessary for those that enjoy world music, electronica and something entirely different.

For atmospheric music, this is an incredible addition to a collection."
