CD Reviews

The Definitive Tatiana Nikolaeva recording, re-released
millionrainbows | 06/30/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Upon a recommendation from a Finnish friend of mine in the forum, I searched out this Regis release. Upon listening to the samples, it is obvious that these are the definitive 1987 recordings, released first on Melodya, then licensed to Allegro and released on Moscow Studio Archives. Good news, because the others are out of print.

Do not even mess with the Hyperion (recorded in 1990 and later licensed to Musical Heritage), unless you like the cavernous sound of a dungeon, or empty concert hall.

These 1987 recordings are much less echoey, and sound much better than the 1990 Hyperion set."
Refinement and musical depth understood as éclat !

"
The figure of Tatiana Nikolayeva has not deserved yet the coveted and expected status she belongs. I just think it's just a question of time for the great audiences around the world to be aware her genuine greatness as one of the most representative male pianists ever born.

Her style of playing, austere, precise and descriptive lacks of exhibitionism or theatrical grimaces (as we lately are accustomed to watch) by reasons of obvious courtesy I will not name them but you know what they are.

Watching her by you tube, you will understand why her legendary reputation. Nobody will never match with her at the moment to play Shostakovich's preludes. Her Bach is just comparable to the great ones like Tureck, Gould, Busoni or Petri.

A true milestone recording."
