CD Reviews

The best local band in all of Massachusetts
Roger Williams | Providence, RI | 06/05/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Wild, uncouth, and irresistable, Lowell, Massachusetts' The Shods are a throwback to the glory days of Boston's local music scene. Their sound evinces heavy mod rock, delivered energetically and stylishly, and with some of the catchiest hooks and choruses I've heard in years. With Boston's local music scene swamped with moribund alterna-techno acts, The Shods are a breath of fresh air, even if the sound brings you back a decade or two. Good rock and roll never, EVER goes out of style, and The Shods deliver."Thanks for Nuthin'" is yet another hard rocking good time, with some insanely catchy sing along numbers. "Eddie Cross" has a shout along chorus I defy anyone to resist, while numbers like "Never Be Like You" and "Walked Away" capture the sound of what Boston's best local acts *used* to sound like. Everytime I get sick of what's happened to Boston's local music scene, I toss in this CD and I don't feel quite as bad anymore. Heartily recommended."
Why isn't this band huge?

(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Shods are a great rock and roll band. They have full on punk energy and great pop hooks. Every chorus has at least four part harmony's and have you singing along on your first listen. This release is more definitely moddish than their prior work which emphasizes their more punk elements. Still it starts strong with Scorpion bowl and goes strong all the way through Million miles. Not a week cut on the album. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is because I like their "Bamboozled" album a little better. Still, a classic record. Its like rock ala 1965 all punked out. My favorite Boston band by far. They put on a great live show too. First time I heard Eddie Cross I burst out laughing at the chorus. Support local music and buy the Shods."
