Synopsis

Shawnna, daughter of the inimitable blues legend Buddy Guy, is meant to be huge; base that on tracks like "Damn"--as fine an ode to bootyliciousness as listeners far removed from the block will ever trip across--and the puff-chested, big-banging title track. But early boosts from BET aside (the kind that may be inevitable when DTP, Pharrell, Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Too Short, 8 Ball, Bobby Valentino, and world-class daddy Guy line up as insurance against a sophomore slump) Shawnna still feels like a best-kept secret--a hard-nosed, downhome chip off her old block. Late-disc surprises such as "Can't Break Me" and "In the Chi" trade in the grit for go-deep truth-telling, and they're bolstered by production that feels snap-tight in some places and billowy in others. Fourteen tracks in, the effect is somehow intimate, as if only block-centric types should be allowed a listen, but through skill alone, Shawnna's made room on the stoop for the whole world. --Tammy La Gorce

"Shawnna is back and better then ever. It's rare to find a RAPPER with lyrical talent and good looks. Then there's Shawnna a Chi-Town repesentative that's holdin it down for the females as well as the niggas. This album is by far better than worth the weight with beats, lyrics, versatality, controversy and depth plus she can freestyle AND SHE WRITES HER OWN LYRICS(shout out to FOXY CLOWN).Here's the lowdown on the whole album.

1.Can't Do It Like Me-One hell of an intro this displays Shawnna's rapid delivery flow telling the whole game she's a force to be wreckoned with and not to be slept on.

2.Block Music-The album title track which features DTP vet 1-20 and Shawnna spittin jagged and rough to a bass knockin beat. Presenting themselves as hustlers on the block and controlling the streets and also making it hard for other emcees to breathe.

3.Damn-A fun club anthem about shawnna spittin about her big behind, with catchy lyrics and a dominating flow she makes talking about sex sounds so good. And also smoke from field mob is on here with his sharp witty flow it's no secret that this album cut is a stand out track for block music.

4.Gettin' Some Remix-feat.Ludacris,Pharrell,Lil Wayne and Too Short this is a great follow up to the smash hit Gettin' some.It is also very suprising to me that Pharrell has the best verse in this song(maybe he's one to look out for too in the future).

5.Candy Coated-THE BEST TRACK ON THIS PHENOMENAL ALBUM.Candy Coated features down south living legends 8 Ball and MJG on this soon to be major hit record. They rap alongside shawnna rippin the beat alive util it beats no more, this is the first for a female rapper to devote an entire song about cars and it works. This has Shawnna's best rapid delivery on the album(listen to the last verse youll see what I'm talkin about).

6.Roll Wit Me-Shawnna displays an intricate story that she tells that can either come off as an interlude or a regular song.Well whatever the case it works.

7.In The Chi-feat. Johnny P. and Syleena Johnson, Shawnna takes you back to the block and reminds you where she comes from and keeps it calm and cool. This is one of those songs that you can cruise to in your car without being to cool about it.

8.Take It Slow-Another outstanding track on this highly anticipated album, take it slow finds Shawnna, Bobby V. and Luda taking it slow in bed but also allowing foreplay to take control and then lead the way into that great s#x.

9.Can't Break Me-A very strong lyrical record and probably the most personal on the album. This song has Shawnna speaking about her past life personal obstacle that she got through. It is also a good inspirational song to young women who can't find their way or they feel like giving up, this song is about hope and satying strong through tough times.

10.Ghetto Fairy Tales-This amazing cut finds Shawnna reminiscing about the hood and telling a tale that most people can relate to.Also it's a wake up call to the public because someone speaks about violence and how crime goes on everyday and how we as people need to stand up for what's right.Great song.

11.Lil Daddy What's Good-This picks up the pace of the album and brings back the sexual innuendos that has created Shawnna this nationwide buzz. The thing is that Shawnna can rap about sex all she wants but it's how she represents herself by not coming off to hardcore and not to soft with a strong solid flow.

12.Hit The Back/Slide In-Another feel good song that makes you wanna bop your head to and it doesnt hurt to have Lil Wayne alongside of her being as though he's a great lyricist.

13.Chicago-This song is self explanatory its all about the Chi fom livin in the Chi to chillin and representin where you come from.Avant's soulful voice and her father Buddy Guy a jazz legend this makes as one of the feel good songs on the album

14.Gettin Some-This is what started it all from BET countdowns to bangin in the clubs and heavy radio spins Shawnna holds her own and delivers the most controversy song she ever wrote to date. She raps about gettin some but doesnt take it too far as coming off as some slut or whore she keeps it calm and simple and that's what I like.

This is one of the best Hip-Hop albums I heard in a while from a female rapper she should just be labeled as a Rapper because her lyrics can compete with most of these mainstream dudes in the games. So fellas watch out SHAWNNA'S BACK ON THE BLOCK.

"This is a good CD. Tight beats and good lyrics. But, sometimes, the beats in the songs overshadows Shawnna's raps and also the other rappers featured in some of the songs "steal" the song away from her or the song ends up being "too much" including them. She has skill and she has talent, don't get me wrong but, a lot of the songs on this CD tend to blend together due to the fact that the majority of the songs on here sound a lot alike. A lot of the same bassy beats and background shouts.

Standout out tracks:

"Gettin' Some" (Remix)

"Damn"

"Block Music (Bang)"

If you are already a fan of Shawnna, I think you will be satisfied with this CD. If you don't know much of her previous material, I would just stick to to songs that she is featured in."

"I decided to buy this CD because I heard some of her as a guest on other male rappers' albums. But, after listening to this CD, I found that Shawnna actually is a pretty good rapper herself. She has a good flow and her beats are pretty darn catchy. Some of her tracks sound as if Dr. Dre influenced it, and a few others are quite apparent that the crunk sounds had impact. She also has a nice mix of guests on her various tracks, but not too much to the point where you start feeling as if the CD wasn't her own. It's nice to have a CD from a female rapper without feeling like you lose any street cred or hard-core image. Although Shawnna is far from the old shcool likes of Salt 'N Pepa and other popular female rap stars, she displays quite a knack for rapping and finding catchy beats on this album."
