CD Reviews

Positive, upbeat soundtrack for the international family
Sokste | Minneapolis, MN U.S.A. | 11/24/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"SEL and Prasoon (credits, song samples, lyrics and much more can be found at: www.taarezameenpar.com) have created a soundtrack treasure for the film by the same name just being released in December 2007. Directed by and starring Indian Cinema favorite Aamir Khan, this film is the creative brainstorm of Amol Gupte based on his own extensive work with children. Every song in this CD is unique and extraordinary, with layers of musical texture and content. Listening to this CD is a unique, vibrant experience!

In the interests of space, I'll mention only some particular favorite tracks of mine:

Mera Jahan (My World): The lone child's voice piercingly opens this masterpiece. These lyrics - which are sung alternately by a children's group and by adults - were written by Amol Gupte, the overall creative director of this project. Kholo Kholo (Open Up): an upbeat folk song vibe, with a perfectly slight touch of the psychedelic. Maa (Ma): The vulnerable child's fears and needs, very heartfelt. Taare Zameen Par (as Stars on Earth), the title song, is very melodious and positive, and speaks to children's perspective on the world.

Jame Raho (Keep At It/keep grinding away): Luscious dance music, completely different from the rest of the album. A little bit like Kraftwerk, but for this century (and from a different continent). I wish they'd do an extended mix, it's over way too soon! Bum Bum Bole (~get active): Aamir's nonsensical scatting punctuates this imagination-based musical game.

This whole CD is a lot of fun and really emotionally engaging: if you want to feel something, listen to this!"
