More country than Come On Over
Dr. Christopher Coleman | HONG KONG | 11/02/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Apparently the marketing gurus think that the international audience needs more of Shania than the homegrown audience--this is the second Shania CD I know of (Come On Over being the other one) with more stuff in the international release than the American. How very odd indeed! And what makes it even odder is that the bonus cuts on both are almost identical--live recordings of her medley of Home Ain't Where His Heart Is, The Woman in Me, and You've Got a Way; and If You're Not In It For Love I'm Outta Here. Both international CDs have a version of God Bless the Child, but they are different versions! This one has a video of Shania singing the song without accompaniment. Personally I prefer the version with accompaniment, but it is a lovely song nonetheless. As to the main contents of the CD, Shania is in fantastic voice here. As I've said before, she doesn't have the vocal dexterity of Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston--it wouldn't be at all appropriate for country music!--but she knows that and doesn't try. Instead she uses the colors of her voice to fine expressive effect--she's got a laugh in her voice sometimes that I love. This CD is much more country than the more pop oriented Come On Over, and occassionally that interferes with the quality, but not often. The first track, Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore) is a terrific song, but Shania puts a bit too much drawl into it, trying to sound plantive; and it doesn't work as well as the version of the same song in the medley bonus track, where she just sings it outright. But on the whole, this is a fantastic album--and I am not a country music fan at all. If you already own the US version, this probably isn't worth the... to get the few bonus tracks, but if you like Shania and don't have the US version, I think this is a better buy. Highly recommended."
The Start of Something

"Shania Twain had a whirlwind of success with this album, spawning 8 singles, and critical acclaim, and the start of what would revolutionize country music. Sure in the past there were other artists who helped paved the way, but this CD paved the way. With songs like "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" which raised some eyebrows with its risque lyrics for country at the time, and her plunging neckline in the video, it was clear her kind of country was different than the norm, and wanted to change the state of country music. The song "Any Man of Mine" was a song that caused a spark, and ignited a fire, a song which is both catchy and demands for respect from men. The album provided a unique style of songwriting and song, from a fresh voice with a daring image, which is what made Shania irresistible. The whole album was written by Shania and her husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange. "If You're Not In It For Love (I'm Outta Here)" is a spunky song, which once again demands respect, songs like this empower women and are very well welcome and another reason why I believe she was well received. She shows her tenderness on the beautiful ballads such as "Home Aint Where His Heart His (Anymore)" and "The Woman In Me" which proves she is just as skilled as a balladeer. This album is still very much country, even though it helped pave the way for new country, which was more pop oriented. Her album COME ON OVER is much more pop friendly. This album still has the fiddles and the steel guitars, in all its glory. "If I Don't Take Two" is a great upbeat two step kind of song. One of the best tracks is the upbeat fun "You Win My Love". This is the import version of THE WOMAN IN ME and it features some extra songs and some multimedia. The extra tracks include a remix of "You Win My Love" and a remix of "If You're Not In It For Love (I'm Outta Here)", and a live medley from her concert of "Home Aint Where His Heart Is (Anymore)/The Woman In Me/You've Got A Way". Pop the cd into your computer and you have the God Bless The Child video. Overall this is a great album to listen to and sing along with, it did change country music in many ways, but overall its satisfying and enjoyable to listen to."
Revolution

"The Woman In Me was a revolution in country, with songs like Any Man of Mine and Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under, Shania changed country music. This is a repackaged version, same 12 tracks as the original, with 3 extra songs. You Win My Love (Remix) is a nice remix, the Home Aint Where His Heart Is Anymore/The Woman In Me/Youve Got A Way medley is great and so is the If Youre Not In It For Love (Im Outta Here) remix is nice too. This was repackaged to appeal to the Europe market, since she has made the pop country transition succesfully. Be warned though, the cd says there are 16 tracks, track 16 being God BLess The Child (remix) and its not included, there are only 15 tracks. If you want a really good album that changed country music forever, with great songs that will keep you singing and dancing, this is your cd."
