Far superior to skin-deep debut, band featuring Bananarama exile Siobhan Fahey delivers minimalistic dance-pop with hints of classic Bowie ("Goodbye Cruel World"), Ohio Players ("Are We In Love Yet") and Eurythmics ("Emotional Thing"; Dave Stewart, Fahey's husband, is present in spirit only). "Catwoman" was likely written for the "Batman II? soundtrack. --Jeff Bateman

The Best Music Ever

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the best CD of my 2587 CD collection!! I can't believe that this group wasn't nominated for a Grammy or something because they are the best EVER! These songs are a little slice of heaven, the lyrics move me everytime I play this beautiful CD. Ever since 2/19/92, I have had this CD in my Sony 5 Disc Turntable and my life has been changed dramatically. My third wife loved the CD so much we named our daughter Shakespeare's Sister Jones. Please buy this CD now, you won't regret a second of it!! Moonshine could be the best song since "867 5309", but I don't know."
Truly a masterpiece

"This album is a truly masterpiece, which combines pop music with goth/rock. And it blends together really well. The vocals of Marcella and Siobhan never sounded so good. This album was way beyond its time, and it's a shame the group never recorded again (as a duo, at least) after this.

The album opener, Goodbye Cruel World, was the first single, which flopped. I can't see why, since it's a listening pleasure. The somewhat depressing lyrics get lost in the campy, poppy production, which invigorates the song and the backing "ooohh la la la ahhh"'s are great.

I Don't Care is a great song. Starting with a great Marcella scream, the ones fans have always liked, the song never loses its power. I like this one because Marcella sings more here than on the majority of tracks on the album. The chorus is classical, Siobhan sings and Marcy replies. Utterly fabulous!

My 16th Apology isn't one of my favourites. It's sort of reggae-ish, and it has sort of a feel-good tune to it (although again the lyrics aren't exactly happy), but not one of the best. That said, I love the way they sing "with friends like me, who needs enemies?"

Are We In Love Yet and Emotional Thing are nice pop ditties, with dark melodies and somewhat crazy lyrics. Pleasant.

Stay is the center of the album. It doesn't match, unfortunately, the rest of the album, because it features Marcy on lead vocals. I wish she had done more leads, because she truly steals the song with her dramatic verses pleading for her lover to stay... that is, until Siobhan starts singing and adds an epic edge to the song. It all merges beautifully at the end, with Marcy screaming "stay" and the music setting the dramatic tone. A pop masterpiece.

Black sky is somthing of a change. After the great ballad, it's time to go berserk. It's probably the darkest track of the album, and it's great. Marcy & Siobhan sing together and are superb. The instrumental break at the middle is fantastic, and Marcy singing backwards (which actually looks as if she's singing opera) is great. Wonderful song.

The song is segued with The Trouble With Andre. Again, it is a dark song, with Siobhan's deep voice all over the top, with Marcy relegated to backing vocals at the chorus. But, still, it's great.

On Moonchild you can hear Siobhan's breath all over the song, which is kinda weird. A quite calm song about misfits, it has soothing verses, till Siobhan demonstrates her range on the epic chorus. The result is good. A sample of this track was used on Tricky's song Overcome in 60 seconds.

"I was floating around the atmosphere, I liked what I saw so I came down here" sing the girls on Catwoman. Very T-Rex influenced, this song is way too overproduced, but it's still listenable and great. Love the girls meow!

Let Me Entertain You is the only track I usually skip. The song bores me to death. The fact that Marcy is relegated to backing vocals and those caveman-like "whoas" really don't improve the quality of the song either...

The last track is also another masterpiece. The ballad, Hello (Turn Your Radio On), a song about the isolation people suffer nowadays, a plea for communication, is totally stunning. Siobhan really knows how to sing this one with a tortured voice, and the way Marcy accompanies her in the chorus is absolutely awesome.

Overall, the girls could never have done it better. It is a vast improvement over their debut album. The only complaint is the fact that Marcella isn't featured that much on the album, but for the rest, it is a stunning album"

"Shakespear's Sister... was an amazing group... ( I like to consider them a group.. because I can't believe they broke up ) The single 'Stay' remains on the top of my list.. it is beautiful... I find it funny how songs like these are forgotten very quickly over the years even though they peaked into the top 5... Can anyone out there tell me why they broke up? or any info leading to them? Shakespear's Sister.. if u are reading this review.. please I beg you get back together, you have the potiental..... you had the set-up.. what happened? Get back out there and knock them dead.. as a duo... your music is memoriable and I dont just want to keep thinking of you as a memory.......... Stay With Me...."
