CD Reviews

Not what I was expecting, almost better though.
Lisa J. Viehouser | 12/12/2006

"I discovered Seth Lakeman on the KT Tunstall site. She recommended him, and I figured that he was similiar. He isn't. KT is more pop rock than folk, but their lyrics are similiar. Freedom Fields is like listening to old ballads by sailors and peasants, and that is what he intended it to be. If you like Nickel Creek, which is more American bluegrass, you'll like Seth. His voice is smooth and perfect for the folk songs.

But if you were expecting rock, which I was, he isn't that. He's easy to listen to, and the songs tell stories, but you certainly can't bang your head to it."

"This artist is definitely NOT in the standard "Pop" mold. If you like Nickel Creek and the solo works of those artists, I think you are likely to enjoy Seth Lakeman. His music is a nice blending of traditional folk themes and more modern rhythms. Seth's work is heavy on the fiddle, but he's got the talent to keep it from getting whiney. I loved this album as well as other things I've heard him do. He is definitely worth a listen if you are looking for something a little different."
Yay - more folk rock!

"You should buy this CD.

Why?

Genre/style: Folk Rock. British folk rock (the best). Think Steeleye Span, but less folk, more original. (I love Steeleye Span.) The songs are new, catchy, interesting. (Look at the lyrics.)

Vocals: He has a great voice! I heard a song of his on some compilation (the song was Colliers), and I immediately bought his CD. I just knew I liked his style. Love his accent.

Price: I bought the CD for like $4. Totally worth it!

Onwards: He has a band! Equation. Haven't tried them yet, but apparently it has Kate Rusby, and at some point Cara Dillon. Looking forward to it. (I'm surprised I'd never heard of him before.) Plus, they're still relatively new, so we can look forward to more music.

That's why.

Conclusion: Like I said: Get it now!"
