CD Reviews

Caressingly Lovely
William A. Brimmer Jr. | 02/03/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Please don't think he is an opera tenor, and for those who say he sings certain passages with "less strain" than the average opera singer, that is not true, he sings them with the warmth of his caressing voice as a popular singer would intone those passage (sadly, they would not be heard over a real orchestra in a real operatic production). However, the voice is wonderful. It touches the heart through its natural beauty, which it has in abundance. There is the touch of a crooner in his style, and it works wonderfully in so many of his songs. Franchi has a wonderful way of "wrapping a song around your heart." He uses his voice so wisely, so carefully, so as to create a world of Romantic whisperings. A very lovely recording, and well worth the money."
S.S.S. =Sweet and Smooth Sergio!

"Sergio Franchi sings every song in this CD with smoothness and feeling. I had the privelege of seeing many of his performances in person in San Francisco. We were heartbroken to learn of his passing - he was too young to leave this world and take his great voice with him. He was a handsome man and very presentable - sexy but classy and very suave & continental looking. The women especially loved him - we all had a crush on him. The men enjoyed him too.....he was irristable. He loved entertaining. I recommend you purchase every CD he has available. Although, I wish someone would take many of his best songs from all the old LP's he made, as they were loaded with terrific songs.

Songs from the incredible Sergio Franchi

"Sergio Franchi was a marvelous singer who charmed his adoring fans whenever he performed; and the songs on this album prove he had incredible talent! I always like to listen to this album; it brightens up my day and Sergio's voice never ceases to impress me. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I like that artwork also.

The CD opens with Sergio singing "Ciao Ciao Bambina" at his usual very best. His sophisticated phrasing is wonderful and you can easily recognize the operatic qualities of his voice. The music that accompanies him fits in perfectly with his singing; and he handles tempo and key changes like a pro! "Serenade in the Night" is equally well done and listen for Sergio to outdo even himself on "Core 'Ngrato" and "More." Indeed, Sergio's rendition of "More" is one of the finest I've ever heard--ever. It's terrific and the musical arrangement makes good use of the strings.

"Volare" features Sergio swinging brightly to make this number shine; he never lets go of a single superfluous note and that's amazing. "So in Love" gets the royal treatment from Sergio; his treatment of this classic show tune reflects his genius. "Anema E Core" has some English lyrics and once again Sergio performs this with all his heart and soul. "What Kind of Fool Am I" is another one of my personal favorites on this CD; Sergio delivers this faultlessly. "Man Without Love" is easy on the ear; and I really like the dramatic and sensitive "Malafemmena" as well.

"Gigi" again proves that Sergio Franchi could carry any show tune well; and "Arrivederci Roma" stuns me with its beauty in Sergio's capable hands. "Arrivederci Roma" is beautiful to hear; and there's yet another gem in "Maria" from "West Side Story." Sergio gives "Maria" the royal treatment and it's a big highlight of the album. The CD concludes with Sergio Franchi performing "Serenata" wonderfully; and if you love this genre of music this last song will leave you wanting more!

Sergio Franchi isn't remembered as well as I wish he were today; but that could change with continued sales of albums like this one. This is an excellent CD for his fans and it also makes a fine starter CD for people just discovering Sergio's magnificent artistry."
