CD Reviews

The downlow
J. Twedt | CA, USA | 12/27/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is obvious that a great deal of time and effort was spent in laying down the tracks in this CD. As any DJ can tell you, mixing Platipus is no easy task. Scott Stubbs has done a masterful job in putting this CD together. It isn't merely an album that is listened to--it's a journey that is taken. The highs are titillatingly high, the lows are unsettlingly low, and the overall feeling is one of triumph. At no point is the artistic integrity of any track compromised. It truly is a work of art. I recommend it in good faith to anyone who can appreciate music."

Modest collection of platipus records

"Platipus Records have certainly been at the forefront of the trance scene for neigh on a decade. Considering the countless tracks in DJ mixes, plus the label's own packaging (and endless repackaging) of their own hits, the issue for dance fans is not the music quality but which offering to choose from. The Evolution of Trance includes most of their big guns. I Ching's warm, coaxing "Ways of Love" may be their most evocative, thanks to a steady bass throb and fresh drum programming. Ambassador doesn't break new ground on "The Fade," but seductive whispering over a beat always works. And Art of Trance's "Madagascar," despite a breakdown that takes longer than the human genome to unravel, was seemingly everywhere back in the day.Since most of these pieces were recorded years back (and this mix in 1999) your appreciation will depend on how much knob twiddling, synth tweaking and blippy melody lines you can take ("Easter Island," "A Night Out"). The style then, now generally passed over for faster, more euphoric fare. Disappointingly, this contains only nine tracks and a little over an hour of music."
