Excellent recording, beautifully played

"I am surprised noone has reviewed this set of symphonies recorded by Menuhin. The recording quality is excellent as are his recordings of Mozart. This symphony and the conductor are very much in sync with each other. The Penguin Guide gave them 4 stars and describes them as "electrically tense, generally at brisk speeds, with an easy feeling for Schubertian lyricism, helped by alert, warmly responsive playing..." I concur with this more professional opinion. I also have Marriner's recordings (1982) which I also enjoy,but Mehuhin's are more clear and bright(more recent,1997), with a more satisfying tempo. You will not be disappointed. I also recommend Sinopoli for the "Unfinished" (this is the most profound and moving version I have heard) and Solti for the 9th."
