Synopsis

Album Description
Australian pressing. If you've never heard Schubert's complete Rosamunde music, this is a great place to start. Karl Mnchinger leads a fresh, vital performance from the bracing overture onwards. The B minor Entr'acte, recently claimed to be the Unfinished Symphony's missing finale, sounds fittingly dramatic in this context. Throughout all the numbers Mnchinger employs a lithe and dramatic touch while maintaining the music's momentum. The Vienna Philharmonic follows his lead and plays with plenty of color and sparkle: powerful brass in the Overture and gorgeous strings and winds in the No. 9 Ballet. The famed Vienna State Opera Chorus lives up to its reputation, with the men sounding especially Tannahuser-like in the "Chorus of Spirits". Contralto Rohanzig Yachmi offers a tender yet noble rendition of the Act 3 Romanze. In fact, all participants make excellent contributions to this wonderful performance. The recording is another one of those Sofiensaal success stories from the 1970s, where the sound is bright, clear, and full. Irresistible. Eloquence. 2005.

Magnificent Munchinger

"Many a classical fan knows the Overture from Schubert's "Rosamunde," but how many listeners know the complete incidental music? I must confess, until recently I did not. All that changed a couple of years ago when I picked up Fritz Lehmann's performance in DG's "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series. It is an excellent account but as it is in mono, I also wanted a stereo version. I had noticed a "Decca Legends" import CD by Karl Munchinger on Amazon, but unfortunately it was listed as out-of-print and was (and still is) fetching ridiculous prices as a rare collectable. Then after some more fine tuned searching, I discovered the very same 1975 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic was available in the Australian Decca "Eloquence" series at a much more reasonable price. This is the first romantic-era disc I have purchased by Munchinger (I do own various Bach and Haydn titles by him), but his lean and crisp style yields first rate results here. I would strongly recommend this CD to anyone (like me) who wants to dig a little deeper into the Schubert repertoire."

"This is a superb re-issue by Decca-London c.d. The perfprmance, sonics and music itself are at the head of the class by comparison to other available recordings. It;s hard to believe that the original recording date is 1975. In fact, it has become one of my favorite classical recordings ever."
