CD Reviews

5 stars trip to another age
Ronald M. Clark | Manchester, NH United States | 03/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I cannot remember the last time I stumbled across a CD as chockful of great tracks, each one deeply imbedded in my soul. Each and every track harkens me back through college years when there was electricity in the air, a strong objection to a war in Asia, and an invasion of blues bands from Britain pouring in over our shores here in the USA. Kim Simmonds on lead guitar riveted audiences all over the country. He stood at the head of the band, near Lonesome Dave, vocals, and between the two of them, British Blues really was defined. Oh, there were others, to be sure. Yes, even "bigger" names. But Savoy Brown played for audiences that were different; audiences that were interested in the music and not neccesarily the musicians, although they certainly were appreciated also. Tunes such as Hellbound Train and Tell Mama were occasionally heard on "underground" or "offbeat" FM stations. Wang Dang Doodle, a blues classic originally from either the American Missisippi Delta or Chicago, was played with that flair of early British Blues that was so refreshing to hear. Those were tracks in which each musicians musical voice was clearly heard, and distinctly played. Yes, the moment Savoy Brown was heard, there was no mistaking their unique sound- Lonesome Dave's voice reflected his name, exactly what you would want in a blues tune. Guitar "riffs" were simple, easy to hear, and left you with a tune in your head. Yup- wish I could see and listen to a Savoy Brown live concert again, and I would want them to play each and every tune on this CD."
