Move over, Alanis. Step aside, Jewel. Sass Jordan, a singer and songwriter from Montreal, could give most singer-songwriters attitude lessons. She's got a strong, gut-deep voice, and on Racine, her second album, she does as the album title implies and goes back to her roots. The result is a fine selection of rock and roll, with more than a hint of the blues in it. "Make You a Believer," "Time Flies," and "Who Do You Think You Are" are especially strong, showing off Jordan's voice to its best advantage. Bypassing the women-in-rock movement entirely--you're unlikely to find her performing at the Lilith Fair--Jordan heads straight for the rock. Not nearly as well known outside of Canada as she should be, Sass Jordan is well worth discovering for yourself. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Spectacular CD

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Put this CD in your player, turn the volume all the way up and get ready to rock. This CD has a very "bluesey" rock sound that makes you want to sing along. Not a bad song on the entire CD."
My absolutely favorite CD

"I have an extensive and varied CD collection, but if my house was burning and I could only save 2 discs, this is the first one I would get out of the house. The second would be Brother by Cry of Love. Sass is one of the best female rockers of all time, and this is definitely her best work. I've had this CD for about 10 years now. I can STILL put it in the car and listen to it for a week straight!!"
A Woman Who Really Rocks!!

"30 seconds into this CD I knew I was hearing the female companion to "Shake Your Moneymaker" by the Black Crowes. If you love that album, you'll love this, because the songs are much in the same vein - straight up bluesy rock 'n' roll. Sass has Joplinesque vocals, but mainly sounds more like Melissa Etheridge. I love the fact that she's a female rocker who doesn't have to announce to the world what she is. She just gets out there and rocks. That, to me, is the ultimate expression of Girl Power. The lyrics aren't specifically written from a female perspective either - which is actually a refreshing change and what I think makes the album very accessible to a wide range of people. Sass Jordan and others like her need much more exposure! She is one of my favorite singers and I'm going to buy the rest of her albums ASAP! Any rock fan should have Racine in their collection and play it loud and often."
