THE FIRST TRUE BLACK THRASH METAL LP!!!
T. Kasuboski | Winneconne, Wisconsin United States | 05/17/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"SARCOFAGO-"I.N.R.I."(1986) is one of those albums that even many supposed "metal experts" have never heard. This is unfortunate because from my perspective "I.N.R.I." is the first true black metal album. It is more brutal(and recorded better) than both of Bathory's first two albums, faster and more demonic than either Celtic Frost or Hellhammer, and far more evil than early Sodom or Destruction. SARCOFAGO, from Brazil, even predates early black thrashers like Minotaur, Necrodeath, Morbid Saint, and arguably, Slaughter Lord. SARCOFAGO's drumming is fast and like early blast-beats(think of Krisiun but a little slower), the guitar work was like Slayer gone even more insane(blended with riff work similar to that on Sepultura's "Bestial Devastation" EP), and vocal wise, SARCOFAGO was like a blend of early Sepultura, "Endless Pain"-era Kreator, and hardcore punk like Extreme Noise Terror, Crude SS, or early RDP(also from Brazil). The production on SARCOFAGO-"I.N.R.I." is excellent, and in my opinion, one of the best in black metal history. The LP is short like a hardcore LP and blugeons the listener in ways many of today's supposed "black metal" LP's don't even come close to. Overall, SARCOFAGO should be considered a CLASSIC early black/thrash band, not a CULT band. As black metal becomes more popular it is becoming far more evident that SARCOFAGO were ahead of their time and of great influence. JUST LOOK AT THE LP COVER(on the original Cogumelo version, NOT the Pavement reissue)!!!! Now THAT is a black metal cover image!!! So sit back, smoke a joint, get evil, and worship the original gods of black metal, SARCOFAGO!!!!!"
Black Thrash is Sick!

"Upon hearing about this Brazilian band, I figured they would just be some Kreator wannabe thrash band. I never really thought A group of punk looking kids making black metal/thrash metal would worth giving a listen. Eventually though I figured I'd give them a chance only since I had some free time to waste. My entire perspective about this band changed when I heard "Nightmare". Hellblasting drums, dungeon massacre 6 string, Judgement day death 4 string and Puking, Growling, disguisting, grimly psychotic vocals. [...], man!!!

They may not have the most talented guitar riffs and amazing solos but when Im listening to black thrash I really dont give a rat if they do. The thrash attitude of bands like Possessed and Kreator fused with the necro-evil and deathcrush madness of bands like Mayhem and Bathory. Total thrash fused with total black metal. This stuff RULES! I really cant get enough of this band lately and Im hoping to find their second album "Rotting" soon. And to anyone who may have judged them like I did, "do not judge the book by its cover" here! Sarcofago rules. Thats the end of it go buy the album immediately."
