Magical Musical Misadventures......
George Gollery | Washington, DC | 10/20/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"How do they continue to do it over and over? The incredible melodies and atmosphere this band's music conjure up never cease to amaze me. As the wonderful liner notes say, "Saint Etienne's music has always been described as 'cinematic'..." and indeed, it is about time that they have a soundtrack album.Even though there are only 5 songs that are over three minutes, I suppose no one ever said a good song had to be a certain length. From the opening 40 second "Statues" (which is actually a re-hashed reverb/synth-heavy version of the opening notes of Shad Thames from Continental) to the absolutely sweet 2 minute 25 second "It's all gone horribly wrong", each track evokes something for me. Granted, I am a die-hard fan, but for those who enjoyed Good Humor OR Fairfax High, this CD is well worth it. AND DO NOT GO TO ONE OF THOSE AUCTION SITES AND BID FOR A CD YOU CAN GET RIGHT HERE ON Amazon!! I recommend this one!!"

"The good stuff keeps on coming. Mose is another of those heartmelting collections of music, which the Et have been making for 10 years now. Tracks like The Way i Fell for You and the Francoise Hardy cover Find me a Boy are instant classics. SE have truly entered a Bacharach-like timelessness with this one. No need to utter words like 'knowing' or 'kitsch'. This is music for anyone who had a heart. Treat yourself"
Great New Saint Etienne Album!!!

"REVIEW OF THE MISADVENTURES OF SAINT ETIENNE CD: This is a great album, it may not be their best album (I still think CONTINENTAL is the best) but it's different and very good - one of their better album. There are 20 tracks and running time is around 45 minutes, out of the 20 tracks, 13 are instrumental. Some tracks and songs sounds so "Saint Etienne" and very familiar, others sounds very refreshing and new. The big surprise here is how the piano is used so frequently in almost every tracks, there are lots of piano twinkling. The 7 songs sung by Sarah are wonderful as usual, I would say 4 out of them are great and the others are okay. The tracks on the CD flows very nicely, as every other Saint Etienne album, it does sound like a soundtrack to a movie - except that in this case it's the soundtrack to a movie called THE MISADVENTURES OF MARGARET. As in recent Saint Etienne albums, there's another wonderful sleeve note penned by Simon Price, he quotes "....This is Martini music: music for any time, anyplace, anywhere....these tunes will follow you wherever you go.....This, listeners, is Saint Etienne at their cleanest.....but with melodies which melt the heart like Mancini or Bacharach....". A must for Saint Etienne fans..."
