CD ReviewsHot Menu - a Japanese Classic briannicholls | Mount Martha, Victoria Australia | 05/14/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "Ah, nostalgic memories of the Mika Band supporting Roxy Music at Wembley back in the 70's, with Mika sitting on stage doing her knitting when not singing! The Mika Band were unique for Japanese rock at the time, with really solid strong structures, a nod to western sensibilities, and a great sense of humour - if you understand Japanese, the wonderfully punning "Mada Mada Samba" is a delight, as is the homage to Jack Nicholson in "Hi, Jack." For this album Tsugutoshi Goto replaced Rei Ohara on bass (Ohara returned for a 1980's reunion album,) and he brought a much more funky feel to the the band's sound, though the tight structures remained. Along with "Black Ship", "Hot Menu" shows the Mika Band at their peak, and is an album that even now I still drag out and listen to occasionally. If you thought that the Japanese never produced anything worth listening to prior to Shonen Knife, give this one a listen. It's worth it."
