"Strange that Hakim's name managed to escape my radar all these years, because the guy gigged with a lot of big names--Ben Webster, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Slam Stewart, James Moody and Buddy Tate, to name a few. In fact, the other two musicians--Errol Walters on bass and Clifford Barraro on drums--were also names I'd not encountered before. This is nothing new, though. There are many unsung heroes of jazz, some of whom never had the chance to even record. We should therefore consider ourselves lucky that Hakim did not befall such a fate. Dead for almost 25 years now, hopefully this talented pianist will garner the recognition his quality of playing demands. The recording is straightahead bebop, comprised of seven standards and two original compositions by Hakim ("I'd Ling" and "48th Street"). Two tracks--"Now's the Time" and "My Little Suede Shoes" are Charlie Parker pieces, and "Lazy Bird" is of course a Coltrane tune. The trio does a terrific job here covering these and the originals are a nice addition. An all-around solid album that I recommend to everyone.
