Sabaton wants You!!!
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 04/12/2008

"2006's Attero Dominatus is album #3 from Swedish true metal crusaders Sabaton, who pair their hard charging melodic heavy metal sound with an obsession with World War II. Sabaton has a lot in common with Running Wild (minus the pirate fixation), though their sound is a bit heavier and more aggressive than that band's.

Attero Dominatus is a melodic, aggressive, and well orchestrated metal album. It's probably closer to power metal, but I think the "true metal" label also applies. Some of the arrangements on Attero Dominatus, particularly on the title track and In the Name of God, actually sound quite a bit like Nightwish circa Wishmaster. The WWII subject matter gives the album some added depth and makes it a bit more interesting than the typical fantasy themes often used in this kind of music. The whole album is impressive. Whether it's the fast and furious approach of We Burn or the epic Rise of Evil, Sabaton delivers a high energy metal assault that is sure to please many a metal warrior.

I can definitely see Sabaton appealing to fans of bands like Running Wild, Grave Digger, Rage, Hammerfall, Jag Panzer, and of course the militaristic Bolt Thrower.

""Attero Dominatus" (2006) is the third album from Swedish power metal band Sabaton.

Here, Sabaton does everything exactly as they did it on "Primo Victoria" (2005): 8 war-themed tracks, 1 very cheesy how-many-metal-bands-can-we-name song, the same style, the same everything. "AD" is even the exact same length as "PV". Sabaton did it well then and they do it well here. They stuck with what worked, and it hasn't gotten old yet.

There's a little bit of self-borrowing here, which isn't surprising. For example, the guitar work on "Nuclear Attack" is reminiscent of the guitar on "PV"'s "Panzer Battalion". But on the whole, it's not too bad.

Ultimately, Joakim Brodén's vocals, Sabaton's unique history-lesson lyrical style and the band's great power metal songwriting make this a top-notch album."
Heavy metal history lesson

"Every time I think about WWII I think Sabaton. These guys pump out a punishing beat with heavy drums and gravely baritone vocals plus they satisfy the history geek inside me by singing about WWII. It's the best combination ever. No other metal band does justice war, artillery strikes, panzers, the a-bomb, killing terrorists, and the lament of the soldier like Sabaton in this album. Give these camo-wearing Swedish dudes a listen and "prepare for nuclear attack!""
