CD Reviews

One of the Forgotten Composers
Steven Margo | El Cajon, Ca USA | 03/31/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is very fine music. Well thought out and crafted. The professors in their ivory towers, having decided which composers would be remembered and which would be thrown into obscurity, did future generations a great disservice creating a very opaque view of musical history. Louis Spohr was a contemporary of Beethoven yet this is not Beethoven-esque. I thoroughly recommend this CD."
Good introduction to this composer
Robert Fliss | Cape Coral, Fla. | 08/01/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For many years, Spohr's posthumous reputation -- such as it was -- rested on a couple of his violin concertos. Marco Polo and Naxos did classical music buffs a huge favor with their extensive Spohr series, which concentrated mainly on his fine chamber music.

This recording shows Spohr was no mean symphonist. If you like Schubert or Mendelssohn, you'll like this.

For my part, I managed to score a used copy in April and listened to it seven times that month. What better endorsement can I give?"
