Another Hit for Braff and Team

""Music for the Still of the Night" is Ruby Braff's 11th CD for Arbors, and he considers it his best. Disagreeing would be difficult. With more than 75 minutes devoted to 10 standards, Braff and his team (the under-praised John Bunch on piano, Howard Alden on guitar, Michael Moore on bass and Kenny Washington on drums) have plenty of time to produce some excellent ensemble and solo music. The tunes are "Thinking of You," "Can't We Be Friends?", "Willow Weep for Me," "Sleepy Time Down South," "I Wished on the Moon," "Linger Awhile," "Looking at You," "Ghost of a Chance," "Fly Me to the Moon" and "These Foolish Things." If you're thinking you've heard him play nearly all of them before, you have -- but not like this. Jazz critic John McDonough's nine-page liner notes are a bonus you'll appreciate."
