CD Reviews

For hardcore fans only

"This is the first Bear Family release I've ever purchased, and may I say that it is a first-class product - a wonderful hard-cover book filled with beautiful color photographs and information and best-possible/best ever sound quality.I'm sure the price will keep all but the most ardent Orbison fans away from this release, and that's probably as it should be. This has EVERY recording Orbison made between '55 and '65, including SEVEN versions of Ooby Dooby. That makes this an historical document more than anything else. That said, this includes every Monument recording, and the sound quality is truly breathtaking. There is one disc that is devoted to a very early Teen Kings television performance. The sound quality is certainly not anywhere near studio quality, and a considerable amount of the disc is given over to the other three Teen Kings (no Orbison) talking. This has also been issued in the U.S. (at a lesser cost) on the Sarabonde/Varese label.I'm an Orbison fan, so I decided to make the considerable investment to have this, and I'm not disappointed that I did so. However, I must say that if there is the fan base out there to support a scholarly and pricey release such as this, surely there is reason to provide a box set or reissue series that would cover the worthy studio releases that covers the REST of Orbison's career. He didn't die in 1965, and there is a considerable amount of worthy material that he release in the last 23 years of his life."
