CD ReviewsBritish Soul Nse Ette | Lagos, Nigeria | 06/15/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "Rox is the latest Soul sensation from the UK drawing comparisons to Amy Winehouse or Adele, especially as she's also an alumnus of Croydon's Brit school. Songs like opener "No going back", an organ-drenched Motown-style affair could have dropped off Winehouse's "Back to black" album.
However, Rox is no mere parody. She's all her own person with a commanding voice, as songs like "Page unfolds" (with skittery beats and a fiery chorus) or the snappy "My baby left me" (which you'd swear was some lost Motown classic) show. "Heart ran dry" is a lovely acoustic piece with jazzy phrasing and a soothing wall of harmonies, while the groovy Jazzy "Breakfast in bed" is pure Neo Soul. Highlight has got to be the gentle lilting "Precious moments" which recalls Lauryn Hill, as does the enchanting Reggae "Rocksteady". "Oh my" is a lovely delicate ballad with strings perfectly accentuating her heartfelt delivery. Rox's "Memoirs" makes for pleasant listening." |
