Synopsis

Album Description
With his second CD release for SOUTHPORT, pianist and composer Ron Surace presents fourteen new, original jazz compositions. The melodies are infectious -- you'll be hearing these tunes in your head and in your heart, over and over again! The musicians interpreting the music of Ron Surace are a strong Chicago-based ensemble, featuring Eric Schneider on tenor sax, Michael Arnopol on acoustic bass and Rusty Jones on drums. Listen as Surace puts his individual spin on the opening easy-swinging track "Cheap Skate", the beautiful ballad, "Here And Now" or the Latin flavor of "Samba II". "The Clone" is a bow to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"-- how many solid new jazz songs can you hear in 5/4 time that stand the test of time-- the melody won't let you go! "Nearly Blue" is a mere musical glimpse of what is to come, through the year's end, and on to 1999 and the future -- the future of jazz with such great new songs! Band Members: Eric Schneider -tenor sax,
Michael Arnopol-acoustic bass,
Rusty Jones-drums
Ron Surace-piano

CD Reviews

Mainstream Jazz Is Alive and Well
John F. Temmerman | Skokie, Il United States | 02/05/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ron Surace, a tremendous pianist and very creative composer is back again with a quartet CD for Southport Records. There's a BIG difference this time - the addition of saxophonist Eric Schneider, like Surace, a tremendous, yet under-recorded player. Eric is a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene and a member of the LAST Basie Band led by Basie himself. Eric's big sound is a great counterpart to Ron's superb technique and creative tunes and solos. The cuts are all originals by Ron and show a wide range of feels within the mainstream jazz genre.Ron and Eric are jpined by Michael Arnapol, a tasty, veteran bassist and Rusty Jones, a top Chicago drummer and a veteran of the George Shearing band. This is a great album from start to finish."
