Skrowaczewski scores again
Gregory M. Zinkl | Chicago, IL | 11/02/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet has everything to offer: tension-provoking dissonances, lyrical almost over the top passages, ethereal quiet beauty, and outright passion and tragedy. No wonder it's so popular. But it takes a special conductor, and a really good orchestra to mine its many treasures.Skrowaczewski has done it again. Truly one of the great conductors of our time who is not known nearly well enough. This is a special recording, although he competes with himself thrice: here, on Vox (not as many extracts, though) and all THREE suites on Denon. The Denon is the latest, and maybe greatest, and has audiophile quality sound. The treasure of the Mercury recording is Mercury's engineering--up close and in your face. It's thrilling, if a little artificial. My recommendation for someone who is just getting to know this magnificient work that they buy the Vox set (which includes lots of other music by Prokofiev and Stravinsky, including a knock-em-down, yet very thoughtful, Rite of Spring), which although has fewer numbers, gives the listener an idea what's on this recording. If one wants all three suites, spend the extra money for the Denon. If one is somewhere in between, this recording will serve quite nicely.By the way, there is absolutely nothing special about Dorati's Night. This music is up Ormandy, Stokowski, or Bernstein's alley and will satisfy much better."
