CD Reviews

Great collection of Goddess' 3 albums
A. Antero | 03/15/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Rock Goddess' self titled debut LP, produced by legendary Vic Maile (Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades", Girlschool's "Hit And Run" etc.), was one of the top LP's of 1983.

Renaissance Records released Rock Goddess' two first albums "S/T" and "Hell Hath No Fury" (originally also in 1983) as a 2CD in 1998 with excellent 12" single bonus tracks. Remastering was decent with some changes in sound level.

Now Reneissance is issuing this collection from the band's three LP's, including tracks from quite rare 3rd LP "Young And Free" (1987).

If you're not familiar with Rock Goddess and you like Girlschool, this is highly recommended. Remastering is decent (yeah, sound level still has changes). If you have all the LP's and 12-inches, well, it's still great to have some of the coolest tracks on CD - although their debut LP is still superior to the bit stiff 2nd and 3rd LP's. Vic Maile got the magic out of 'em when producing the 1st LP, no question about that.

However this release is very rushed. Track 12 is not "Satisfied Then Crucified", but "Our Love's Gone". Insert booklet includes only one page history of the band and some pictures, including their first 2 LP covers, some single covers and other photo session pics. No cover pic of "Young And Free". Even though it's very lame, it would have been good to be included. Also, credits say Chris Tsangarides produced both their first two LP's. That's bollocks. Let Vic Maile have credits for the job well done in producing the classic debut LP.

It's a shame Rock Goddess never got the success they deserved. They surely belong in Female Heavy Metal throne together with mighty Girlschool."
Tiny disappointment, but still gets 5 stars

"I have their first 2 cds on a 2 disc set and I love it. I'm a completist so it was good to get this for the 6 songs from their 3rd 'lost' cd which is rather weak (I wasn't willing to pay the high price that I seen it for at a record show -especially after hearing the songs). Even with the weaker songs I still give this 5 stars as they have enough good material crammed onto this disc from their first 2 cds. My only small gripe is that the song 'One hot night' is not on this, although some of their other b-sides appear here and/or as bonus tracks on their 1st cd. I do have said track on a vinyl 12" single (and on an 'unofficial' live cd I picked up at a record show). Personally due to the absence of that song, I'd give it 4 stars, but for recommending it on it's own merits I grudgingly give it 5 stars."

"Never even knew this British trio of metal babes had any other releases out except their 1983 self-titled album. Total of twenty-two heavy-hitting 'girl metal' cuts here to sink your teeth into. Just a few choice tunes here are their signature rocker "I Didn't Know I Loved You...", "Heartache", Boys Will Be Boys" and "Hey Lover". I, for one actually got to see their bassist Jody Turner (I believe it was) out on tour with Girlschool sometime ago. Great pick."
