Synopsis

Album Description
2009 solo album from the prolific singer/songwriter and former leader of Guided By Voices. You want nostalgia? OK, here's some nostalgia. Think music as real and unselfconscious as anything since Same Place the Fly Got Smashed or songs alive with Alien Lanes' aesthetic but even hookier and smarter. Music that sounds just like friends playing for the fun of it in the family basement (so the family's grown up and moved away, it's a different house, and it's not exactly a basement anyway, but I defy one to hear the difference). 22 tracks.

CD Reviews

This is not GBV
Mordikai Crump | Olympia, WA | 08/14/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The title says it all, and many things are said in that title, to boot. This is Robert Pollard's best album since "Isolation Drills" (which I love). This is a rock album from start to finish, with little in the way of filler, despite the 22 songs. Each song has a great riff, and as Steven Soderberg says, "No one can write a melody like Bob!" My favorite GBV records are Vampires On Titus and Propeller, and I think this album is up there with them. My favorite songs are "Hippsville" and "To Know". I am going to drink beer and listen to this record at work when I am dealing with your crisis over at the crisis hotline!"
Bob's best solo album

"Robert Pollard is releasing some of the best music he's ever done. I really like Bob's guitar playing on this CD, it gives the music a freshness that has been missing from his recent solo outings. I just wish that Bob would possibly find a better drummer for his solo cd's. I am not really complaining that much, it's just that Todd Tobias' drumming can be very weak at times, especially on any song that has a lot of ride cymbal. Highlights for me on this disc are "Stiff Me", "Jimmy" & "Tattered Lily". Actually, the whole thing is a great listen all the way through. I hope Bob continues to play guitar on future solo cd's. If you are a pollard/gbv fan, get this disc! Highly recommended!"
