CD Reviews

Remixes spoil an otherwise decent collection
William | Australia | 01/17/2005

"It may not include all of the American hits (eg. Early in the Morning) but the most significant international hits are here and digitally remastered.

What is wrong with this compilation are the remixed versions of "Bad case of loving you" and "Looking for clues". These remixes appeared on an earlier Palmer compilationn and have resurfaced again on this! Why? Apparently Palmer re-recorded these and other early songs a few years back because he wasn't happy with the originals. Unfortunately, the originals are brilliant, and should have been included. Based on reviews for the American equivalent of this compilation, other customers agree with me.

The CD also includes two new songs recorded before his untimely death."
Addicted to a Simply Irresistible Music Album

"I had forgotten the late Robert Palmer had so many hits. I wasn't very old when most of them came out but when I hear them on this CD I still remember them, they are great songs. I originally got this album for Some Like It Hot and Simply Irresistible and whilst they would still be my favourites I'd have to say there's definitely no fillers on this album. Throughout Robert Palmer's career he made some great songs, and you'll find them on here. Definitely a must have album. Also a pretty extensive cover booklet that gives you a great background and history. No lyric sheet is the only thing that lets this album down."
At His Best Better Than Very Best But Not The Best Of Palmer
Thomas Leonard | Pittsburgh PA | 12/05/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"At His Very Best is slightly different singles collection of Robert Palmer's work, focussing heavily on songs that hit either the US or UK Top 20 in the 80's and 90's. Similair track listing to the previously released The Very Best Of Robert Palmer, there are only a few variations, although this collection does feature Palmer's excellent funk rock cover of Allen Toussaint's "Sneaking Sally Through The Alley" as well as two selections from his critically acclaimed 2003 album Drive. Unfortunately, other than "Sneaking Sally", Palmer's early years are largely ingnored except for the US Top 20 Hits "Bad Case Of Loving You" and "Every Kinda People". Likewise, most of Palmer's post 1990 output other than the two Drive cuts is unaccounted for as well. If it's hits you are looking for, thsi set does have them. Palmer trademarks like "Addicted To Love", "Simply Irresistible", "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On", "You Are In My System", "Some Like It Hot", and "Get It On (Bang A Gong)", the last two performed with the Power Station, are all included. Only a handful of US hits, namely "Early In The Morning", "You're Amazing", and "Hypercative" are absent, replaced by UK chart toppers like "She Makes My Day" and "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight", an inventive reggae cover of the classic Bob Dylan hit performed with Ub40. Palmer's transatlantic smash hit Marvin Gaye cover "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You" is also included. Solid but unspectacular collection that would suit casual fans but leave more interested listeners cold."
