Product Description

The show features a great plot, fascinating characters and perhaps the most melodic and memorable score in recent Broadway history. This concept album features the first workshop cast of "Blackbeard," an amazing group of talent down to the last ensemble member. The story surrounds Blackbeard's most brazen act: the May 1718 blockade of Charleston Harbor. In the process, a ship full of wealthy passengers is taken hostage and among them, newlyweds Miss Anne Johnson, daughter of the colonial governor and her husband, Lt. Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy. Meanwhile, despite warnings of bad luck, Blackbeard has invited aboard his latest pursuit, a woman named Mary, who challenges his fearsome facade and sets in motion events that will change everything.

"This show will be around for a long time. It was completely unexpected that BLACKBEARD would as polished and professional as a Broadway production but that is the case. A Mesa Arizona Community College has staged an original musical show which deserves to move forward. It will be fun to watch it's progress. The sets were clever, the lighting and costumes all added to the show.....and the actors were uniformly talented and well directed. But the music......it is unbelievable! You will leave the theater humming......and if you didn't buy the CD, you will wish you had. [...]This reviewer has seen a lot of Broadway productions less moving than BLACKBEARD THE MUSICAL. Creator Rob Gardner has a monster on a leash. Hope he handles it well."

Outstanding Cast Album

"Blackbeard is one of the very best concept albums I have ever listened to. And I have listened to this one over and over again and have never grown tired of it. The show's book seems easy to follow from the lyrics. And the lyrics are almost never forced and are always very imaginative. The orchestrations fit perfectly with the time period in which the musical takes place. The cast is uniformally very good. Blackbeard has the sound of a wonderful old fashioned musical. And, of course, the melodic score makes the show. Its the type of musical I miss a great deal. Broadway critics currently seem to be very cynical of the old fashioned historic/romantic musical. The shows that receive the best reviews usually have a hard edge that frequently translates to an almost unlistenable original cast album. I have seen 100s of Broadway shows, but for once I wish I lived close to Mesa Arizona instead of within easy access to Broadway."
