CD Reviews

What a nice album!
Matthew Leclair | 02/16/2001

"Years ago I interviewed Rinde Eckert for an underground 'zine. This was during his "pre-maximalist" Slow Fire days. His music was harsh, diificult, and brilliant to the point of being scary. He told me then that if you like what he's doing now, you probably aren't going to like the next thing he does. Quite frankly, I hated this album the first time I listened to it. To me it sounded like one of the most talented singers in America singing stuff you might hear on GAC. Not that I have anything against country, mind you, but hearing a great opera singer singing it is just, well, a let down. But then I found myself listening to this album over and over again. There's a Richard Thompson like effortlessness and subtlety here that never ceases to suprise me. Rinde is a true artist. He's doing what he wants to do, not what you want him to do. It's coming from the heart. Give it a try! It is worth the effort."
One of the best voices in America

"I'm a Rinde fan so I am biased, but I truly believe that he possses one of the best voices in America. Rinde sings "stuff," that nobody else could sing and he sings with such a range and with such ease that I get the impression he could sing along side a Pavorotti or Terfel and blow them right off the stage. He sings with Pathos and he sings with a smile on his face. It's fun music!"
