Synopsis

Album Description
2008 compilation from the Welsh singing sensation from the '60s and '70s. The Very Best of Ricky Valance includes all of his A-sides and B-sides recorded for EMI including the seven million seller 'Tell Laura I Love Her' This chronological album not only showcases both sides of every one of Ricky's EMI releases but also includes his two other best known '60s singles: 'Six Boys' and 'My Summer Love' (and its B-side 'Abigail', which Ricky issued under the name Jason Merryweather in 1969). It is obvious from listening to the top-notch tracks on this CD, which were recorded at the height of his career, that Ricky Valance not only has a far better voice than most of his contemporaries, but also deserved many more hit singles. 21 tracks. EMI Gold.

EXCELLENT TRIBUTE TO BRITISH POP STAR OF THE SIXTIES
A. POLLOCK | PLYMOUTH, DEVON United Kingdom | 09/06/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Welshman, Ricky Valance is best recalled for his 1960 Chart topping single TELL LAURA I LOVE HER, which sold over a million copies in the UK. Dealing with the death of a girl-friend, Ricky's version was a cover of Ray Peterson's US hit with its controversial theme incurring press accusations of "bad taste" that ensured the song was put on the BBC's banned list. Nevertheless, the record's success lead to Ricky's disc being a hit in 14 countries, with overall sales estimated to have reached seven million copies worldwide.

Ensuing releases failed to emulate such popularity but this welcome compilation includes all of Ricky's EMI/Columbia singles recorded in chronological order during the period 1960-62 as well as a 1965 Decca single (SIX BOYS/FACE IN THE CROWD).

By 1969, Ricky recorded MY SUMMER LOVE and ABIGAIL for Crystal Records under the name of Jason Merryweather and that too is part of this complete collection which includes excellent singles MOVIN' AWAY, JIMMY'S GIRL, TILL THE FINAL CURTAIN FALLS and I NEVER HAD A CHANCE.

Ricky is still performing but this nostalgic collection represents his golden period and must rate as a must for those collector's who consider UK Sixties pop culture a very special period in the history of such music.
