Synopsis

Album Description
When Ricky Nelson made the first of the recordings here (in 1957), he was just 16 years old. Already a veteran of radio & TV (since the age of 8) with a gold record (gained earlier that year for I'm Walking), Ricky began a long relationship with Imperial Records towards the end of 1957. The band he used on these sessions helped define his sound almost as much as his singing. In its ranks lurk the likes of guitarists James Burton and Joe Maphis, drummers Earl Palmer and Ritchie Frost, pianists Gene Garth and Ray Johnson and bass players James Kirkland and Joe Osborne. "He had great backing - he always had a great band" - Jerry Lee Lewis. For this outstanding collection of early rock'n'roll, Ace have added 18 tracks to the original vinyl's 14 making this the definitive compilation of the uptempo material he recorded for Imperial. "History books are gonna have to say that he played a big role in rock 'n' roll music...and he did it his way" - (Carl Perkins).Sleeve note writer John Stafford, a founder member of the Rick Nelson Inter-national Club of Great Britain also quotes Roy Orbison, Fats Domino & Sam Phillips paying tribute to Nelson.James Burton has thankfully now fully recovered from a recent accident and is back in the studio. Ace will be donating a percentage from each sale of this CD to help towards his hospital bills.

CD Reviews

I LOVE IT WHEN THEY DO THIS!
Charles Wilder | Dover, NH United States | 12/17/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"All or almost all of Rick's rockers on one CD! If you are an old rockabilly cat like me or a new rockabilly cat for that matter your collection isn't complete without this one. There is a weak cut or two here . For instance he should have left "Whole Lotta Shakin" alone or tried another arrangement. But overall it's great fun. Rick could rock for sure and was always backed up by a very tight band no matter who was in it! If you are a guitar player both Burton and Maphis are in top form here. This CD fits right in with Carl, Gene, Eddy, Elvis and all the other great Rockabilly artists. Highly recommended!"
Ricky Rocks! Ricky Rules!

"This is EXACTLY the Rick collection I was looking for. Straight-ahead Rickabilly with nary a ballad in the bunch. Rick was truly bad to the bone, as important as Elvis or Carl Perkins (who were big Rick fans themselves). This would make a great companion piece to any Sun Records collection you might have a mind to pick up (Elvis, Carl, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis). Make Rick an important part of your daily Rock-n-Roll diet."
EXCITING collection!

"For those who like their rock & roll FAST & FUN, this CD collects 32 (count 'em, 32!) Rick Nelson recordings made between 1957-61. And MOST of them were never available on CD before! A worthwhile package. (This may change-- 3 of Rick's early albums have recently been put on CD at last: RICKY and RICKY NELSON as a "twofer", and possibly his best, RICK IS 21, as an expensive import with bonus tracks!)"
