The lesser known

"This album is a must vor various reasons. Two of the most prominent reasons are the following: to get familiarized with Richard Grossman's work as an improviser in general, and two; to hear an important work of contemporary music - a fine meeting betwixt classical and improvisatory tendencies.

Richard Grossman isn't as well known as other household names in the avantgarde school, but from this record it is clearly evident that it should be. He describes his own playing as a proces of composing in real time. Now this may not be too radical a concept, but what is radical is the new meaning that this description takes in the hands of Grossman.

Just listen to the first cut on this album and it becomes quite clear that we are listening to a man fully in control of his craft, as the improvisation is beautifully shaped into an architectural piece. And this is where the second element of importance comes into play.

Upon hearing the improvisation unfold, it is clear that Grossman is in touch with the classical tradition. The piece gives hints of atonal Schönberg, played by Thelonious Monk perhaps, a much more modern Thelonious. It is a great solo piece.

Now, I let you discover the rest of the album on your own, and find out how grossman unfolds in a trio setting. Definitely worth checking out. There are also hints of Cecil Taylor and Matthew Shipp, but sufficiently original to be distinct. Not easy listening for mainstream jazz fans, but for the adventurous ear, it is a treat."
